Ingredients

For the hot chocolate
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 4 oz semisweet chocolate finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 pinch kosher salt
  • 3 oz Irish whiskey
For the whipped cream
  • 0.5 cup heavy cream cold
  • 1 tsp powdered sugar

Method

Make the hot chocolate
  1. In a small saucepan, whisk together the milk, chopped chocolate, cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and salt over medium-low heat for 4 to 5 minutes, until steaming and smooth; do not let it boil.
  2. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the Irish whiskey.
Whip the cream
  1. In a chilled bowl, whisk the heavy cream and powdered sugar until soft peaks form.
Serve
  1. Divide the hot chocolate between two mugs and top each with whipped cream.

Notes

For the smoothest topping, use cold heavy cream and a chilled bowl. Refrigerate leftover hot chocolate for up to 3 days; freezing is not recommended. For a dairy-free variation, use unsweetened plant-based milk and dairy-free cream.
