Tennessee Onions

Tennessee onions are baked in a 9x13-inch dish until tender, then finished with a bubbly, lightly browned layer of mozzarella, cheddar, and Parmesan. Butter and Italian seasonings make this a hearty Southern side dish.

Ingredients

  • 1 nonstick cooking spray for greasing
  • 3 sweet onions large (about 2 pounds), peeled and sliced into 1/4-inch rings
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter cut into small pieces
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 0.5 tsp dried oregano
  • 0.5 tsp kosher salt
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese shredded
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese finely grated

Equipment

  • 1 9x13-inch baking dish

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Lightly coat a 9x13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  3. Arrange the onion rings evenly in the baking dish.
  4. Scatter the butter over the onions.
  5. Sprinkle the onions with the garlic powder, Italian seasoning, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  6. Sprinkle the mozzarella, cheddar, and Parmesan evenly over the onions.
  7. Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and bake for 10 to 15 minutes more, until the onions are tender when pierced and the cheese is bubbly and lightly browned.
  9. Let the onions rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For the best texture, slice the onions into even 1/4-inch rings. Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days; freezing is not recommended because the onions can become watery. For a dairy-free option, use dairy-free butter and shredded cheeses.
